The current issue of Entertainment Weekly - February 26th - has another cover story on our favorite TV addiction. Jack and Clair on the cover and a 4 page story inside. Some interesting tidbits on who will be making a come back. I like the handy listing of main characters with a comparison of their Island World status compared to their Sideways World (non-crash) status. Yes, there are photos of Sayid and Sawyer. Also, the date of the series finale (agh!) is May 23rd.

The Lighthouse 6.5
First, this warning: a lot of stuff has hit the proverbial fan this week so I have to be brief.
Well, I for one (and perhaps in the minority) thought this was a great episode as it had great character development, action, and a crazy psycho jungle lady. Best comment, from Maureen Ryan's The Watcher at the Chicago Tribune: "Claire is convinced the Others have her baby (sorry, but with that Australian accent, I kept expecting her to talk about the dingos who stole her baby. I'm sorry, I know. I'm a bad person)." Tee hee.... [check her out at http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2010/02/lost-jack-lighthouse-mirror.html ]
Many are speculating after last night that Jack has been chosen to replace Jacob. But strange mind that I have I think he will be the next Temple Leader/Dogen. I think its Sawyer is He Who Will be Jacob. Its not just the good hair color match. But consider the conversation Dogen and Jack had about leadership and Dogen speaking Japanese to keep some distance from his flock. And then we have Dogen being a father at the Sideways Lost Music Recital... all this bonding can't be for nothing. As usual, that's my theory and I'm sticking to it, for now.
I suspect the appearance of Desmond any time now...yes, I think that's who Jacob is expecting. Though now that Jack destroyed the Lighthouse (or did he...?) how will that...oh... by NOT warning Desmond off, by NOT preventing him crashing into the Island. Hmmm....
Nice to see Jin/Daniel Dae Kim getting some real meaty acting time... the way his face let us know he was recognizing just how NUTS this new Claire was and how he had to dance to her psycho tune to survive, wow, great job. I knew she was going to slice and dice that poor Other no matter what... Oi Vay, and her surgery on poor Jin, man I hope we don't have to go through much more of that. I don't know how Jin kept his head...but that he did (if you remember your Kipling) he is THE MAN! To say I have a bad feeling about what's heading for the Temple is an understatement. Only Miles and Sayid are still there of our band...though Ilana and company are heading there, so, my heavens, what a mess is brewing.
Great bit from Doc Jensen's recap: the music that David Shephard played at his audition is the same music that Daniel Faraday played when his Mom came in and basically closed the door on his world of music. Ole Mrs. Hawking crushed her son's dreams while Jack rejoiced and encouraged David's.
The Washington Post Ladies bring up an interesting point: how has time moved for Claire? I'm not so sure its even 2007 on the Island, but for her, considering how we last saw her and with whom.... maybe even more time has gone by. This would give more support for Blonde Jungle Boy being Aaron. I still think its Jacob...but I am very open to alternatives.
OK, must run. I hope this latest winter storm (wind) will be kind to us all,

Sawyer The Hero
It's always a kick to see one's theory supported by an expert. I got a big rush reading the latest Doc Jensen entry at EW.COM http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20313460_20346167,00.html . OK, I know he goes off on one of his tangents regarding the music, and as I'm not a fan of Huey Lewis, I have no comment on that. But go ahead to page 4, to Sawyer's Journey, and YEE HAAA!!! I say AMEN! It's just what I thought - the big moment when Smocke came back from chasing mystery boy and lied, and Sawyer lied right back to him about Richard. Sooo cool.
I got a chance to see a little preview today for tonight's episode and holy crazy people, Batman, but the Island is lookin' to see some action tonight.
Until we meet again....

Substitute Theories and Questions
Steffen, a new member of the LOST Lunch Gang, posits an interesting theory
It's a chess game! Jacob and un-Locke are the kings - black and white. Two kings on a chess board can't kill each other - they need all the other pieces for that. So they bring all these other pieces to the island to try to kill each other. The people that come to the island become either black pieces or white pieces (maybe when dipped in the water in the temple). That's why everyone (the others) is so aggressive - they're pawns whose sole purpose is the kill each other in order to get to one of the kings...!
Interesting, but like so much, brings up more questions. In chess, once the King is “killed” – checkmated – the game is over. One would think that Ben killing Jacob was the checkmate. But Jacob isn’t gone. He has appeared to Hurley, sent the ankh, and apparently appeared to Smocke in the jungle. If he (Smocke) thought that’s what was going on (that he won the game) it would explain his reaction later when he was clearly shaken up by the boy’s appearance, not once but twice. As I dimly remember from my chess playing days, the King can take other pieces, so either Jacob or Smocke could “kill” another piece/player. What would then be the “rule” that Smocke can’t kill Sawyer?
Unless….could it be…a new game started and Sawyer is the new King?
Another thought…in chess, White goes first at the start of the game. I wonder if that’s part of the “inside joke” that Smocke alluded to in the cave?
Oh, and of course, I am just churning over Ilana scooping up some of Jacob's ashes. First thought is that these are what her group and the Others (and around the ole Cabin, remember?) used as a protective shield. So, does that mean there were other White Shirt people, Protectors, so to speak, who met similar fates? Yikes, not a good retirement plan, if you ask me.

The Substitute, First Shot
I will just come out off the bat and say I think this was one of the best ever episodes in a great series. So much to ponder.
First, Rose. So, my suspicions were correct, NOT crashing didn't turn out so great for her. She does still have terminal cancer. I also want to comment on something said by the ladies at the Washington Post Blog. They made the statement "And similarly, Rose circa "Walkabout" seemed like she was living in a dream world, insisting her husband was still alive despite what appeared to be all evidence to the contrary. In tonight's episode, she was the realist...." But remember, She Was Right about her husband being alive! She wasn't living in a dream world, she had faith, based on what? Maybe, its just, who cares. She was right.
Second big time question is who was that boy!?!?! At first I was sure it was Jacob, mostly because of how completely it spooked Smocke. I mean it seemed he just forgot to off Richard. He also lied about seeing him again to Sawyer AND seemed subordinate to him when reminded about the rules. But then, wouldn't you know, those WP ladies brought up the possiblitiy it might be...Aaron! At first I was ARE YOU NUTS? But then (there is usually a "but then" with this show) I thought of something I saw in the repeat showing of last week's episode. When they showed Sawyer digging out the box of momentos in his Dharma house the legend at the bottom talked about it having been there for over 30 years. Now, they said Sawyer and co. left in 1977, and I believe they jumped to 2007. But if they didn't land in 2004 like the Sideways timeline (or as I like to call it - ALTS) then, hey, maybe its 2015! I mean, I always believed Aaron was meant to be on that island for so many reasons. I will definitely have to think about this one.
Third, I don't believe for a minute that Smocke is the good Island Beach Man. I pretty much think Sawyer doesn't buy his act, either. I would think that Sawyer can smell a con pretty easily - he sure spotted faux Locke without any trouble. I loved that both Sawyer and Smocke lied to each other in the jungle, Sawyer about Richard and Smocke about The Boy. I think they each knew the other was lying. What fun!
Fourth, even watching it twice in one evening I missed the photo of Locke and his father in his cubicle, so thanks to the WP Blog for the link. (they seem to have really upped their game this season.) So, that really would be a huge change - Locke and Pop as Buds.
Fifth, speaking of changes. Holy SAT's Batman, Ben Linus for European History!?!?!?
Sixth, I am in the camp that says that cave is Smocke's not Jacob's. Jacob has a very nice place in The Statue, thank you, with no dangerous decrepit ladders to worry about. If Smocke feels trapped, wouldn't HE be the one looking for replacements? And is it just me but I can't believe it's random that Jack's number, Shephard 23, doesn't relate to the 23rd Psalm...The Lord is my shepherd, etc. Oh, you want me to tell you what it means? Like I know.
And while I agree with Lapidus (how do I love thee...) about that funeral, oh my goodness, I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats.
And, the title of this episode. Thought it just referred to Smocke taking over Locke...but surprise! It's Locke's new job, too. Good one.
And I am so glad that Ilana will be moving Sun in Jin's direction...of course now Jin may not get back to the Temple if Crazy Claire gets in the way. Oi Vay! Also, I don't know what she meant by Smocke being stuck with his new face. It has me grappling with the notion that MIB was taking on the appearance of Claire, Kate's horse, Christian, etc. But if he can't change appearances that way... were those Jacob? I have to really chew on this for a while.
Ok, that's all my brain can process for now.

Locke Prep for Tonight from Doc Jensen
The Good Doctor has worked up the Essential John Locke Guide as a warm up for tonight's episode The Substitute. Check it out at
http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/02/16/lost-doc-jensen-locke/?ew_packageID=20313460?xid=email-alert-lost-20100216-item1
He reminded me of some important moments and brings up one of the my big ongoing questions - Christian Shephard, why do he and his children have such a major role in the Island's story?

An-ti-ci-pa-tion (sing if you know it)
Well, tonight NCIS is a repeat so I will get to watch both LOST episodes, the repeat (enhanced, I hope) of last week's at 8pm and a new one at 9pm. Nice break from the cold, howling winds and endless snow heaps. But spring is close at hand, well, Spring Training, anyway. Pitchers and Catchers report this Friday. They already had the tryouts for the Racing Presidents at Nationals Park... I can almost smell the hot dogs already! Check it out at http://nats320.blogspot.com/ Just scroll down past the entry on Snow at the Park. BTW, this is one of my new links listed over on the left side.
So, here is another source of information previously unknown to me, Maureen Ryan at the Chicago Tribune. Thanks again to Leslie for the heads up:

Thanks to Leslie for bringing this to my attention. Scroll down to get to the video

I can't say I understand it all yet... but he certainly brings up a lot of interesting observations, especially about Locke's walkabout in the alternative timeline.

Musings on the First 3 Episodes
Record Breaking Blizzards sure can throw out your schedule...especially when they come in pairs. On the other hand, with the city shut down in the white-out and the wind howling outside it was sort of nice to spend a day on an island.
I went back over the Season 6 Premiere and realized that I missed some very key points. I had missed, I confess, that the group I call Island One - Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Jin, Hurley and Sayid - did NOT land back in 1977. Doc Jensen at EW.com gave me the heads up...but he thinks they landed in 2004. A safe assumption until episode 6.3 "What Kate Does". During the sequences with Kate and Jin in the jungle with Others guards Justin and Aldo we get a couple of key references. First, that the French woman has been dead for several years; second, that they know about the Ajira plane landing. Also, Othertown is pretty deteriorated, and as I recall in 2004it was in good shape. Icing on the cake, are those 2 kids Cindy had get food and drinks for our Losties at the Temple, Zack and Emma. Aren't they the same ones taken off the beach in the Tailies episodes, that we later see tracking through the jungle with their Teddy Bears? If so, they have aged...about 3-4 years. So...That puts them in a good position to be reunited with the other Losties, Island Two (Sun, Ben, Lapidus) at some point. Of course, it creates a problem with the Alternative (ALTS) Non-Crash Losties who are in 2004...so to speak.
What does it mean? No idea, yet.
I have been reading some of the recaps. I worry that Doc Jensen has really gone off his meds or that too many time leaps did him in, like Charlotte. Right now I am still putting together what I saw. But some things did strike me:
In the ALTS universe the Island is submerged. IF this is a result of the Jughead demolition (the time shift, not the explosion) and if it happened back in 1977 it would mean a lot of people who were on the Island at the time might not have gotten off, might not have lived. Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking come to mind, not to mention Penny. If Charles never got off to sire a child... Alex was about 5 or 6 years old when Charles was banished by Ben.... which would put it around 1992 or so.
I have to say at this point I don't see one timeline as better or worse IN GENERAL than the other. Jack thought it would be better if the crash never happened, and for him, maybe so. But we know something he doesn't, that Rose has terminal cancer and will die soon. Until told otherwise, I am going with her still being sick. After all, Locke is still crippled and Charlie is still an addict. We don't know what fates await Frogurt or Arzt.
Oh, hit the pause button here. I was channel surfing a bit during my dinner and what do you suppose was on AMC? The Fugitive (1993) with Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford. And what do you know...there were Rose and Arzt as part of Jones' US Marshall team. What a hoot! Little did THEY know what was coming.
Ok, unpause. Though apparently the producers are pushing the idea that there is no RIGHT timeline, I am suspicious that the same people are in 2 time strands, slightly off kilter, at the same time. AND one group has memory of "before Jughead" and the other doesn't. I know we all look for signs to support our theories, so the exchange between John Locke and Jack at LAX at the end of the season premiere really struck me... John tells Jack his condition is irreversible. Jack (JACK!) tells him "Nothing is irreversible." Even this fracturing of time...perhaps?!?
Another little tingle for the LAX Non-Crash reality is the little item of Oceanic Airlines losing Christian Shephard's body! Ah, call me a suspicious little person but I think this is the equivalent of those rockets going off at the Temple. It was imperative that conditions be matched as closely as possible when Ben and Eloise were rounding up the LOSTIES for the return to the Island...including having a dead body on the plane...a dead body that had to have something of Christian Shephard on him. (see the Season 5 episode 6: "316" - Eloise tells Jack that the Ajira flight must mirror the Flt 815 as closely as possible and that he has to get something of his father's to give to Locke, whose standing in as a proxy for Shephard Sr.) So...I can't help but wonder... if ole Dad's body wasn't on Flight 815, does that make things a little dicey? Was this loss an accident or was someone in this timeline attempting to undo Jack's "go back" strategy?
Ok, there are other very big questions, which, I think, is OK since its the start of the Season and we don't really want this to become all clear and de-mystified this early in the season do we? Where is the fun in that?
I do wonder why, for the first time as far as I can remember, that when the gang time shifted solid objects went with them...the VW bus to be exact. I mean, it was the same nice working VW bus in 2007 (or so) that they were driving in 1977. Just sayin', Dude, that it has me curious.
Oh, and Miles is awesome. Josh Holloway is an incredible actor - what an arc this guy has had on this show. Ben, poor Ben, the universe just kicked him in the gut again.
Namaste for now.

The Desmond Shannon Path Possibilities
Ok, so much for waiting... my first thought waking up this morning (I know, scary) was...what does it mean that Shannon ISN'T on the Flt 815 but Desmond IS on the plane, sitting next to Jack?!? That this reboot isn't just a reboot. Things, some things, are very different. If Desmond is on the plane (and I have some little inkling with the whole way he just sat down, not his real seat, and later disappearance, that perhaps this is not what it seems) and not on his sailboat does that mean (oh my!) that there also is NO PENNY?!?!?!?! Could that mean that something is also different with Widmore? He never got off the island to have a daughter, perhaps because...the Island was destroyed back in the new 1977?
So, that led my brain to thinking...does the coming war between the Others and Smokey lead to the Island's destruction - the END that Jacob alluded to in last year's The Incident? And what will the reboot look like for the new 2004?
The problem I had with Jack's Reboot plan was that while for some of the Flt 815 passengers not ever landing on the Island may be a good thing (mostly the people who died there) but for some never getting there - this new reality - may not be so great: Kate, Penny and Desmond, the Others on the Island and of course, Rose.
But there are about 15 more hours of LOST to go to answer my endless questions.

Holy Head Spinning!
Well, that cleared up things nicely...HA! What a ride, though. Suckered us in quite nicely with seeing Jack on the plane at first. Then, surprise, another time line. At the same time. Huh? Terry O'Quinn is such a great actor. Not liking at ALL his treatment of Richard. But I need some time to digest this. But wasn't it nice to see Sayid wake up at the end? I hope someone comes up with pithy names for Long Haired Asian Guy in Charge at the Temple and LHAGICATT's Translator Man. And last but not least thank heaven for my VCR.
Wishing everyone here in the east/DC area safe travels tomorrow morning - I heard tonight that this area has already gotten more snow this winter than the 3 previous years COMBINED!

Questions, Questions
So I finished watching my DVD's of Season 5 and so many thoughts going through my mind. Where and When and What will be after the flash? My bet is the season will start with a closeup on an eye opening, whose will it be? If Jack's does it mean we are back where we started? Did he really get to click his heels together and go home?
How weird was it to watch Richard with survivors in 1977 AND 2007?
Jack doesn't know this, but his RESET will be very bad for Rose and Bernard. On the island she is cancer free. Off the island, she dies.
I got a very heavy "Book of Job" vibe watching Jacob and the Man In Black scenes. Are Jacob(God?) and MIB(Satan) running a cosmic test on humanity? Ben, unlike Job, doesn't keep his faith, but loses it and kills (really?) Jacob.
Are the Ajira folk the remnants of Dharma? It must exist somewhere since the Hatch was getting those food drops. Who is Penny's mother? Is Smokey really Richard? He says he gets his orders from Jacob. We were told Jacob is "in charge" on the Island. Remember the carving on the column over the vent where Smokey came out for Ben's judgement? It showed an image of what appeared to be the smoke creature in front of the seated Egyptian god whose statue is out on the beach.
Which takes me back to is Jacob a good witch or a bad witch?
