Tidbits LOST, Baseball, Spring

Fans of the Island's Man of Mystery, Richard Alpert, might want to check out his interview at http://www.tvguide.com/News/Getting-Lost-Richards-1015701.aspx  in which the actor gives a look at the upcoming (March 23rd?)  Richard centric episode.  He gave the title which is in latin and I didn't quite catch but means "From Eternity".

One of the highlights of the recent Oscars was the win by Michael Giacchino for Best Original Score for the animated film UP  - very well deserved.  He is also the composer for LOST!   UP is a wonderful film that I can't recommend highly enough, I'm so glad it also won for Best Animated Film.

Spring seems to finally be more than wishful thinking.  First there is the sunshine, the temp going up to the high 50's and of course, most important SPRING TRAINING HAS BEGUN!!!  Joy Joy Joy, I can turn on TV - ok, the MLB Network, and see actual fields of green, bats, gloves and players doing their thing.  Bliss.  Hey, when everyone is in first place, hope is everywhere.  The upcoming Oscar show got MLB Network to think of the best Baseball Movies.  Several have garnered  nominations, with Pride of the Yankees (1942) leading the pack at 11.  The Natural (1984) got 4, Bull Durham (1988) and Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) got 1 each, and Field of Dreams (1989) got 3.  Other great Baseball films are Eight Men Out (1988),  and one of my favorites, Major League.  You could make a great double bill with Eight Men Out, John Sayles telling of the infamous Black Sox Scandal of 1919, followed by Field of Dreams, the film version of William Kinsella's magical novel in which the Black Sox's Shoeless Joe Jackson is a central figure.  For me its a hard pick for best all time baseball movie between Field of Dreams and Bull Durham. The first calls up the emotional love of the game, its history, its call across generations; the second film perfectly captures the obsession of fans and the humanity of the players.  I never see a conference at the pitcher's mound without wondering if they are really talking about where they are going for dinner later....

For more information on these films go to the link for Internet Movie Database - the link is under Movies on the left.

So, as we await tonight's episode with baited breath, dread and yes, excitement...

Namaste and Go Nats!
